Hello everyone,
What was Mark Huggan, owner of Phantom Couriers doing at 3 am, on Wednesday March 2nd?
No, Mark wasn't taking a well-deserved rest after a long day of work. Instead, he was taking care of a customer's parcel that was stuck with the US customs.
Here's the story, as told by Mark. "It all started on Friday Jan 28th....

John, from the Letter Shop, calls with a serious delivery: four cases of documents and name tags for a large corporate meeting in San Francisco for his Client Haywood Securities.

Knowing the time was short & the value was high I knew that they would be inspected at US Customs.
I informed john this could happen and that it could delay delivery and he informed me that this would be disastrous.

Monday: The packages left Vancouver, and arrived at the US Customs in Ontario, California and were scheduled for inspection. Day one, gone.
Tuesday: I watched and called, hoping to assist in the clearance but Customs was busy and I was in a long line...
On line information was little help and the operators couldn't do any better. I stayed up late wondering what I could do.
Luckily a call I made at 3 am went through. A Customs officer was able to clear the packages for delivery, they left at 4 am and were delivered at 8.
Wednesday: at 9.00 am, the Hotel had opened and distributed the goods, the meeting was on.
John at the Letter shop was the hero and his client was happy. One lesson I learned: calling Customs at odd hours can unlock situations way faster than any other ways."

Hello!
I'm Yoori from Korea. Here for an international internship. I came to Canada with another 24 students from my university in Korea. They sent us for work experience for better our career.
We all went to school in Canada for 2 weeks and on the second week, we started to interview for jobs as an intern. I had an interview 4 weeks ago at Phantom Couriers and got a job here.
On the first day, I was so nervous and worried but excited. I came to the office and I realized that I didn't even need to worry about it! Mark, Caillie and Marika were so kind. And they knew I was here to learn English. So sometimes they talk to me and ask me something about Korea to make me say something in English. They help me so much. And they have so many things that I can learn from them. They work really hard and try to make the clients satisfied all the time. They are really positive. They never complained about being busy or anything. They always smile to everybody! I've learned so much. I really appreciate that.
But I'm leaving soon because I'm still a senior in university so have to graduate. And that makes me so sad. I would never forget the good times I've spent with them.

Last Week Mark Huggan was lucky to be invited to the Rotary Club InternationalFoundation dinner at the River rock Casino In Richmond BC.
370 Rotarians and friends of Rotary gathered at the River Rock on September 29th to raise funds for The Rotary Foundation, honour Rotarians for their support and service to our Foundation and hear RI President Ray Klinginsmith speak.
I was amazed at what the individuals at this event do for everyone from a Member opening eye surgery theaters in South America to groups almost eradicating Polio in Countries in Africa. I was inspired and humbled by my group of friends at Rotary.

Kelly Jablonski from Concrete recently finished up an extremely impressive bicycle tour that raised 93,249 + dollars for Parkinson's research. He and his team rode 1,354 kms through Vancouver, Whistler, Lillooet, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Kelowna, Osoyoos, West bank, Merritt, and Hope, which totaled 47 hours and 55 min of time spent on their bikes. Congratulations to Kelly and his group for completing the ride while raising awareness and much needed funding.

Bringing a whole new meaning to “high art,” David Allison surprised a public information session on the Vancouver Art Gallery’s proposed move this week with his tales from the vault. As a member of the VAG’s acquisitions committee, Mr. Allison has visited the gallery’s basement storage, and reports not only an “appalling” leak down there, but that he has also detected the scent of marijuana smoke in the air.

“It wafts in from the front steps. So here I am in this room surrounded by Emily Carrs and Group of Seven pieces and all these amazing, amazing contemporary artworks that we have in our possession as a city and as a citizenry, and there’s dope wafting through the air.”

Mr. Allison, a Vancouver marketer specializing in real estate, made the observations about the storage facility on Wednesday night to illustrate the need for the move.

“It’s not an ideal situation for us to be storing our legacy for the future.”

The VAG is a notorious gathering point for pro-marijuana events (such as the annual 420 gathering) and it’s not unusual to see – and smell – pot being smoked outside.

“On average, there’s someone smoking a joint here every hour,” a bike courier who would identify himself as only The Kid said outside the VAG on Thursday. He and a group of colleagues said they gather there every day and, yes, they indulge.

While Mr. Allison said, “it just seems like common sense” that pot smoke would affect the art collection in storage, gallery director Kathleen Bartels assured The Globe and Mail that the works are protected.

“We monitor on a daily, hour-by-hour basis,” she said, suggesting Mr. Allison was in a different part of the basement from the vault when he smelled the smoke. “We don’t have leaking water in the vault,” she added.

The pot-smoking bike couriers dismissed the idea as well. “You’d think those things would be secure,” The Kid said. “Isn’t the vault a self-contained unit? Air tight?”

Added Dominique Ross: “It’s just another excuse to blame it on pot. ‘Oh, we have to move because of the pot.’ ”

The VAG is in a former provincial courthouse that was renovated almost 30 years ago. Ms. Bartels says the gallery needs to move because the facility is too small. Only 3 per cent of the permanent collection can be exhibited at any one time, there isn’t enough room for educational programs, and the storage vault is full. She wants a new purpose-built gallery on a city-owned block at 150 Dunsmuir St.

The gallery has submitted a formal proposal for that land. “I’ve had a lot of positive feedback from the city,” said Michael Audain, chair of the gallery’s relocation committee.

Mr. Audain said he expects city council to deal with the matter in the fall. “I still feel very positive about it,” he said.
